7 min read

The Five Elements, known as Wu Xing in Chinese, form the foundation of traditional Chinese metaphysics. These five elements - Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water - are not merely physical substances but dynamic energies that interact with each other in specific patterns.

Understanding Wu Xing is essential for anyone practicing Feng Shui, BaZi, or Traditional Chinese Medicine. Each element has distinct characteristics, colors, shapes, and correspondences that can be used to analyze and enhance different aspects of life.

The Generating (Sheng) Cycle describes how elements nurture each other: Wood feeds Fire, Fire creates Earth (ash), Earth produces Metal, Metal collects Water, and Water nourishes Wood. This cycle represents support, growth, and healthy relationships in our lives.

The Controlling (Ke) Cycle shows how elements restrain each other: Wood parts Earth, Earth absorbs Water, Water extinguishes Fire, Fire melts Metal, and Metal cuts Wood. This cycle represents boundaries, challenges, and necessary limitations that keep things in balance.

Each element is associated with specific colors, shapes, and directions. Wood corresponds to green and rectangular shapes in the east. Fire is red and triangular in the south. Earth is yellow and square in the center or southwest. Metal is white and round in the west. Water is black and wavy in the north.
